Summary

[edit]
Description

Senator Mark R. Warner (D-VA) addressed more than 300 National Science Foundation employees during his June 20 visit to the agency’s Arlington, Va., headquarters. A member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation--one of two Senate committees with authorizing responsibility for NSF programs and budget--Warner emphasized the importance of basic research and related education in remarks that covered the legislative and policymaking process. His one-hour talk included a fact-filled presentation on the federal budget, expenditures, and the debt. After his remarks, Warner fielded several questions from NSF staff. Prior to the talk to agency staff, the senator met privately with NSF Director Subra Suresh.
