Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Septarian concretion from the Cretaceous of the American Great Plains. (outdoor public display, Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, Nebraska, USA)

Concretions are post-depositional structures found in some sedimentary successions, particularly in shales. They vary in mineralogy, size, and shape, but often have flattened to slightly flattened spheroidal shapes. They typically form by post-depositional mineralization around some nucleus, such as a rock fragment or fossil fragment. Septarian concretions have developed cracks during their formation.

Stratigraphy: Pierre Shale, Upper Cretaceous

Locality: undisclosed, but apparently derived from the American Great Plains, possibly Nebraska
