Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Seth L. Mason House, 282 Jersey Street at West Avenue, Buffalo, New York, July 2021. One of two adjacent houses on Jersey Street designed the same year (1886) by the Buffalo-based architectural firm of Swan & Falkner, the Mason House differs from its counterpart by incorporating noticeable Romanesque influences into what's otherwise a typical early-period Queen Anne design: witness the rough texture afforded by the ruddy façade, the molded brick band delineating the round arch over the door to the second-floor balcony, and especially the blind Syrian arch crowning the double window on the right-hand side. More redolent of the Queen Anne is the cross-gabled roof, whose peaks project over recessed lower portions that contain the attic windows, as well as the oriel window on the side. A tanner by trade, Seth L. Mason (1832-1912) was born in Canandaigua and headed up an eponymous business with his brother Frank during the sixteen years in which he resided in this house. He retired in 1900 and moved out two years later.
