Summary

[edit]
Description

Weathered shales in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

The mottled maroon and gray shales seen here are part of an ancient deltaic complex called the Borden Formation. The Borden is a significant unit in the Lower Mississippian of Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. Prodeltaic, delta front, and delta top deposits are present. Named members in eastern Kentucky include (from bottom to top) the Henley Member (or Henley Bed), Farmers Member, Nancy Member, Cowbell Member, and Nada Member. This outcrop near Morehead, Kentucky consists of fine-grained siliciclastics of the Nada and coarser-grained siliclciastics of the Cowbell below that.

The top of the Nada Member (where the gray ledge starts in the photo) is a significant disconformity, with the Upper Mississippian Slade Formation (formerly the Newman Limestone) occurring above. The entire Middle Mississippian is gone here. The gray ledge at the top is the Warix Run Member of the Slade Formation, a cross-bedded calcarenite limestone unit.
