| Description |
English: The Shannon Bldg, SW corner of Commercial Ave and 6th Street. Built in 1891 and originally known as the Blackmore Block, it was designed and built in the Eastlake style by Fairhaven merchant William Blackmore, who moved his family into the building upon completion. It would be purchased in the mid-1890s by local hardware merchant G.W. Shannon. Later in the decade the upstairs was converted from a mixture of offices and apartments into lodge rooms, first being occupied by the Rebekahs and later joined by the Odd Fellows after their own building was damaged by fire. The building remains remarkably intact today and is a rare example of an 1890s wooden commercial block. |
