| Description |
English: Sherborne 'Old' Castle, 27 July 2015. Built 1122-37 for Roger of Caen, Bishop of Salisbury. Sir Walter Raleigh received the castle from Elizabeth I in 1592 and he started a rebuild of it which lay unfinished when he lost his money in an expedition to Trinidad in 1595. In 1617 it passed to the Digby family (Earls of Bristol) who built a new 'castle' (a stately home) nearby. In the English Civil War the castle underwent two sieges finally falling to the Parliamentarians who demolished it in 1645. Pictured is the gatehouse and courtyard. |
