Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Sherwood, 140 Linwood Avenue at Barker Street, Buffalo, New York, January 2020. Built in 1923, this sprawling apartment building is an example of Colonial Revival architecture in which the requisite Classical detailing is understated but elegant. This manifests itself most notably along the roofline, where a stone cornice is undergirded consecutively by modillion brackets, a dentil course, and a frieze ornamented with paterae. The patera motif (alternating with Greek-style triglyphs) echoes on the face of the continuous stone windowsill that demarcates the bottom of the fifth-floor windows. Meanwhile, at ground level, the deeply recessed central portion of the façade contains a handsome front entrance framed by a pair of Corinthian columns, a round-arched transom and sidelights, and a stone entablature, whilst recessed round arches with a sunburst motif crown the first-floor windows in contrast with the jack arches above the others.
