During the summer of 2020, the amount of sea ice in the Russian Arctic Ocean has reached minimum levels compared to average reference values.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: During the summer of 2020, the amount of sea ice in the Russian Arctic Ocean has reached minimum levels compared to average reference values. Due to the reduced quantity of ice, the Northern Sea Route (also known as the Polar Silk Road) has seen an early start for the tankers and cargo ships traffic. This image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 12 July, shows a caravan of three ships navigating through the sea ice. These are the Russian nuclear-powered ice-breaker Yamal, opening the road for Happy Diamond and Happy Dragon, two Dutch cargo ships en route to the Siberian port of Tiksi among the sea ice of the Laptev Sea (Lat: 76, Lng: 150.7). The Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites provide high resolution data that allows ship detection and classification as well as the determination of a number of important parameters, such as position, heading and velocity.
