[edit]DescriptionShips in Suez Gulf, Egypt.jpg |
English: Due to the COVID19 pandemic, all economic sectors have suffered a setback, many supply chains have been interrupted and some have come to a complete stand still. Maritime traffic has suffered this same fate. A once vibrant and bustling Suez Canal, in Egypt, has recorded a strong decrease of maritime shipments due to this decline in global trade movement. This image, composed using two multitemporal acquisitions from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites shows how the world lockdown has affected maritime transits. It is clearly visible that the number of ships in anchorage areas in the Suez Gulf during May 2020 is much less than those there in May 2019. These images were captured during 15 – 30 May 2019 and 15 – 30 May 2020. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites, offers a great way to monitor ship routes and harbours movements. |
