Summary[edit]

Description
English: Narastan, also referred to as Narayansthana in historic literature, is a small village with the ruins of a historic Hindu temple in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is about 15 kilometers northeast of the ancient Kashmiri capital of Avantipora.

The Shiva temple of Narastan stands midst the scenic slopes overlooking a valley. The temple is within a square prakara of 65 feet. The prakara walls are 5 feet thick and 5 feet high, with an arched entrance gateway and a small mukhamandapa (portico) on the west. The other three walls have a recess in the middle, shaped for statues – but those are lost.

The walkway past the entrance leads to a vestibule whose walls have fallen. Thereafter is a lofty 8.5 by 8.5 feet square plan main temple with a pre-11th century Kashmiri-style arched entrance. It has a pyramidal roof, most of which is lost. This imposing temple is best compared to ones in Payar and Pandrethan – both being smaller than this Narastan Hindu temple.
