Notes | This scene can be most aptly described as ‘Buggering the Russian’. Both the Japanese and Russian figures are infantry soldiers, since the Russian has what looks like a rifle with a bayonet. The Russian soldier is portrayed as distinctively Caucasian, with a pointed nose, white skin, and ginger hair and moustache (most likely styled after the traditional stereotyping of the Westerners as ‘red-haired’, or ko-mo- jin, in Japanese prints). The print ostensibly depicts sexual violence in a battlefield situation. However, the image is altogether more nuanced and complex because of the Russian soldier’s expression, which is somewhat muted. Also intriguing is the fact that this male-to-male sexual act takes place in an abstract space, with no obvious background illustration apart from the distant group of charging Japanese soldiers with a flag. Metaphorically, this image of a sexually potent Japanese soldier can be interpreted as the masculine and powerful conqueror, Japan. The Russian soldier is depicted as having no choice other than to accept the violent act of the Japanese conqueror – that is, Russia is no longer the dominant force in the region but subservient to the new power, Japan. Imagery relating to fighting appears in earlier shunga (see Clark et al 2013, p. 323 and cat. 108). [NS] | |||||||||||||||||||||||

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. ![]() |
