Summary
[edit]DescriptionSigiriya 0168.jpg |
English: The magnificently-conceived Lion Platform, on the north side of Sigiriya's rock, was the main entrance to Kasyapa's citadel. It must have allowed the court full scope for welcoming ceremonials, and overawed both courtiers and visitors alike as they entered between the lion's paws to begin their steep climb to the top of Kasyapa's citadel.
The original brick gatehouse, carved and plastered into the shape of a lion's front, rose 14m (46 ft) above the entrance plaza. Now, only its feet remain to give us an idea of the impressive whole; each foot is twice the height of a person. Kasyapa used the symbolism of this magnificent gateway to establish himself as the Lion King, so to speak, of the Sinhalese people. |
