Description
English: LG=Leaving Group; Green indicates the bond from which electrons are being donates. Red indicates the bond that is being broken and the electrons that are being sequestered to the leaving group.

(a) The two main routes to the 2-nobornyl cation are the sigma route (top) and the pi route (bottom). (b) The sigma route involves electrons from the sigma bond between carbons 1 and 6 being donated into the sigma anti-bond between carbon 2 and the leaving group.

(c) The pi route involves electrons from the pi bond between carbons 1 and 2 being donated into the sigma anti-bond between carbon 6 and the leaving group.
