Summary

English: Tom McClean, (Location Withheld): "When I was in the Paras in Borneo and had a resupply I read in a newspaper that Ridgway and Blyth had rowed the Atlantic, so in the SAS at Hereford, halfway through my stay I was getting itchy feet and there wasn’t a lot on so decided to row it, I wanted to be the first person to row any ocean alone, unaided. My nickname in the army was Moby as I spouted off at a lecture so that stuck and years later in 1995 I went to William Reed Engineering in Forres and we built the whale from a model, scaling up, starting from the keels up, made from box-section girder. The main plates of the bottom of the hull were 18mm plate and welded in clinker, overlapping, very heavy construction, immensely strong, two and a half years in construction. The big thing when I built the whaleboat was I needed big thumpers, big heavy engines but not knowing they were very noisy, very smelly and burn a lot of fuel but now we are converted and realise the way forward is clean energy and diversifying to electric power, regenerating electric power."
