English: The objective of the shown design is to ensure that the triac conducts only during the zero crossing periods of the AC mains Phase cycles.
As we can understand, the triac will conduct when the SCR BT169 is ON during the input triggers. The SCR can be ON only if the PNP BC557 is conducting and providing the SCR its gate voltage. When an input trugger is applied, the BC557 senses the AC peak value, and while the AC peak is above a value of 1.8V the BC557 is unable to conduct due to a high potential across its base/emitter. When the peak tends to drop below around 1V, the base of the PNP gets forward biased and conducts. This allows the SCR to get the required gate voltage and it fires, triggering the triac, and ensuring the intended zero crossing conduction. |
