View of Širvėna Lake from the northwestern corner of Biržai Castle, in the north east of Lithuania. Širvėna Lake is the oldest artificial lake in Lithuania, created in 1575 when a dam was built on the rivers Agluona and Apaščia. It was created to protect the Radvila castle in Biržai. The modern city of Biržai, which was built around the castle, is located on the southern shore of the lake while the suburb of Rinkuškiai, famous for the brewery of the same name, is on the western shore - seen in the distance in this photo. |
