| Description |
English: Built in 1941, this Colonial Revival-style building was constructed as a convent to house the Benedictines that staffed the adjacent Holy Cross Schools and Holy Cross Church. The building features a hipped roof on the main wing with a gabled roof on the wing extending towards Southern Avenue, terminating in a parapet, a red brick exterior, concrete base, an octagonal attic window on the gable end, brick quoins, brick banding along the roofline, six-over-six double-hung windows, an addition on the east side with hipped and low-slope roofs, an elevator shaft, and a new entrance facing Church Street, and a rear exterior metal fire escape. The Sisters’ Residence building, now home to the local branch of the Catholic Social Service following the departure of the last group of sisters, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, along with the adjacent Holy Cross Catholic Church, rectory, and school buildings. |
