"George Ridley was one of the best known of all the Tyneside performers /composers from the middle period of the C19. He was born in Gateshead in 1835. An accident at the heavy Engineering firm of Messrs Hawks, Crawshay and CoThis left him with a severe injury, which resulted in his being unfit for regular (heavy or manual) work. He turned to performing in music hall and became well known for his songs and singing. Amongst his songs he wrote The Blaydon Races and first performed it in 1862. His health following his accident was poor and he died aged 30 at his home In Gateshead in 1864." Newcastle City Guides |
