Summary

[edit]
Description

Six Hills Common, Stevenage, 2 April 2013. This year, I signed up as a volunteer with Stevenage Borough Council/Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, to carry out butterfly surveys. This is one of my two sites (out of four being surveyed). I am sharing both my sites with three other people. The surveying period started on 1 April and ends on 29 September. The temperature is currently too low for butterflies, but as this was the first week, we were advised to walk our sites anyway, so that's what I did. I think I picked the best day and time for it, as there was 100% sun, and a relatively calm wind and temperatures up to 7°C. But still no butterflies.

As for the site itself, the six hills are burial mounds, or barrows, of Roman origin, probably constructed in the 2nd century. The land here has probably been common for almost as long, though it has reduced in size over the years. The grassland is acid/neutral, and supports flora such as Harebell and Early Hair-grass. There's a lovely Yew tree, as seen in this photo, and also a Gorse bush currently in flower. An Elm tree here could support the White-letter Hairstreak butterfly, but the key indicator species I'm looking for are Meadow Brown, Large Skipper, Small Skipper and Essex Skipper.
