Summary
[edit]DescriptionSkunky monkeyflower, Diplacus mephiticus (32511967567).jpg |
skunky monkeyflower, Diplacus mephiticus, Nevada, White Mountains, Montgomery Pass, Columbus Salt Marsh drainage, elevation 2388 m (7835 ft). This variable annual monkeyflower, named for its skunky odor, is found in the mountains and high valleys of eastern California and western Nevada, in a wide variety of habitat from 1300-3700 meters (4200-12000 feet) elevation. Like a few other annual Diplacus species, skunky monkeyflower is dimorphic for flower color, with the yellow and magenta forms often mixed together in the same population, as at this location. But almost as often I have seen populations with only one of the color forms present. The plants here are the "Mimulus densus" phase of the species, a taller form with narrower leaves, and usually found in pure yellow populations in drier sagebrush and pinyon-juniper habitats. Also visible here is litter of singleleaf pinyon pine (Pinus monophylla). |
