Summary

[edit]
Description

Limestones, shales, and sandstones in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

The upper and middle portions of this large outcrop in Kentucky are in the Upper Mississippian Slade Formation. The unit was formerly known as the Newman Limestone ("They always change the names to protect the innocent!"). Slade Formation limestones are shallow ocean deposits. The section shown here has numerous paleosol horizons (= ancient soils).

The lowest wall, above road level, is interbedded deltaic siliciclastics of the Borden Formation's Cowbell Member (Lower Mississippian). A disconformity separates the Slade and the Cowbell.

Stratigraphy: Slade Formation (Upper Mississippian) over Cowbell Member of the Borden Formation (Lower Mississippian)
