Summary
[edit]DescriptionSmiliodon and smilin' Ted DSC 0996 (23856331736).jpg |
That's a big kitty! Fierce looking too. Big, long, forelimbs, good for grabbing, no doubt. The structure of the cat's backbone is remarkable, each vertebrae slightly different, reflecting function, while retaining mostly-common features. Just used in different ways. For example, left to right, the first vertebra in front of the hips, and the last before the ribs. The structure is all about vertical loads at the rear legs, but strong in all directions, twisting included, where it joins the rib cage. The 90 degree joint between rear leg and rear feet is also notable, compared to the in-line arrangement on the forelimbs. In comparison, Ted is more of a generalist, limb-lengths reflect a bipedal lifestyle AND fine motor manipulation of the physical world. Note opposable thumb and digital camera. His teeth are smaller, and more even in size, and he doesn't look like he's been dead in a tar pit for 40,000 years! |
