Summary
[edit]DescriptionSolare, Obelisk of Montecitorio, Rome (26458018951).jpg |
This obelisk was imported to Rome from Egypt by Augustus commemorating his conquests in Egypt. The obelisk was originally erected in Heliopolis, Egypt during the 26th Dynasty during the early 7th century BC. It functioned as a sundial during the Augustan period and was located in the Horologium next to the Ara Pacis. The obelisk was badly damaged when it collapsed and buried sometimes after the 11th century. The current base of the obelisk has been reconstructed using fragments of the original and pieces of the Antonine Column whose excavation was unsuccessful deemed unsalvageable.
