Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument at Veterans Memorial Park, 400 East Avenue, Lockport, New York, as seen in March 2021. A 40-foot shaft of pink Georgia marble with a seated statue of Lady Liberty at its top and the Latin motto DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI ("it is sweet and fitting to die for one's homeland", a line from Horace's Odes) on its pedestal, the monument was sculpted by locally based artist A. Raphael Beck and erected in 1931 on a patch of city-owned land known at the time variously as East Avenue Park or Byron-Douglass Park. The monument has been the subject of several restorations since then, most recently in 2005.
