Français : Collier Songhaï. Paille, cire d'abeille, fil de coton. Tombouctou, Mali, avant 1951. Museum der Kulturen Basel. Depuis des décennies les femmes, à Tombouctou fabriquent des bijoux en paille et en cire d'abeille. Ces objets ressemblent à des bijoux précieux en or. La forme ressemble à celle d'un bracelet à fermeture répandu au Moyen-Orient entre le XIe et le XIIIe siècle. On la retrouve dans la gamme de bijoux des Peuls - une société de bergers d'Afrique occidentale - sous la forme de rubans en or portés très près du cou. Ceux-ci devinrent si populaires dans la région de Tombouctou que les femmes songhaï s'approprièrent ce type de bijou et le réalisèrent en paille.
