Summary

[edit]
Description
English: object type / vase shape: East Greek South Ionian trefoil-mouthed oinochoe

- description shoulder: floral volute ornament between 2 sphinxes between 2 griffins between 2 goats (orientated outside) - body: 5 friezes of grazing goats - production place: Milet (?) - the oinochoe clearly originates from the same workshop as the Lévy oinochoe in the Louvre, concluding from the almost identical decorative system (compare e. g. the painting around the rim). The figure drawing (e. g. of the griffins) and the details of the filling ornaments, though, differ from the Louvre piece considerably. The Louvre oinochoe shows more careful drawing in the ornamental details, e. g. at the intervowen ornament on the neck. Therefore the Soprintendenza oinochoe could be by another painter or by the same painter at a slightly later phase of his production. Una pagana felicità“, May 2021 - January 2022, Venezia, Palazzo Franchetti
