Description
English: Lichtenstein (northeastern Switzerland), around 1411 Toggenburg Chronicle. Extent of 267 sheets with 149 miniatures. Opaque colors on parchment. The Toggenburg Chronicle is an outstanding example of a splendid vernacular manuscript from the early 15th century. It includes the complete text of the world chronicle of Rudolf von Ems: from the beginning of the world to the book of Solomon. The text is expanded to include descriptions of profane parallel events, such as the story of the Trojan War. Central events are depicted in great detail in numerous, almost side-touching miniatures.

Die Toggenburg-Chronik ist ein herausragendes Beispiel für eine volkssprachliche Prachthandschrift des frühen 15. Jahrhunderts. Sie umfasst den kompletten Text der Weltchronik des Rudolf von Ems: vom Beginn der Welt bis zum Buch Salomos. Die Schrift wird um die Schilderung profaner Parallelereignisse erweitert, etwa durch die Geschichte des Trojanischen Kriegs. Zentrale Ereignisse werden in zahlreichen, fast seitenfühlenden Miniaturen detailreich geschildert.
