Summary[edit]
DescriptionSrifhistology3.jpg |
English: This is an image taken with a microscope from a lung disease called smoking-related interstitial fibrosis (SRIF). This lung abnormality occurs only in heavy current smokers or ex-smokers. The walls of the air sacs (alveoli), known as alveolar septa, are thickened by collagen that is described as "ropey". This excess collagen is known as fibrosis, and the walls of the air sacs are part of the interstitium of the lung. Hence the term "interstitial fibrosis". This abnormality is usually found by pathologists in the lungs of smokers undergoing surgery of lung cancer, but occasionally this type of fibrosis can cause cough and shortness of breath. |
