English: Built in 1901-1904, this Classical Revival-style courthouse was designed by Jerome B. Legg to serve as the courthouse for St. Charles County, and replaced an earlier Greek Revival-style courthouse built in 1840 that stood at the corner of Main Street and Madison Street at the present site of the old St. Charles Post Office. The courthouse sits atop a knoll with a grassy lawn extending to 3rd Street to the west, Jefferson Street to the south, 2nd Street to the east, and the newer County Administration Building to the north. The building is clad in Carthage and Bedford limestone with rough-hewn walls, one-over-one windows, arched window bays on the second floor, a hipped roof, towers with pyramidal hipped roofs and finials at the corners of the building, a central cupola with engaged corinthian columns flanking arched windows on the exterior of the drum, a dome clad in copper with a lantern, decorated pediment at the central bays of the facades above Corinthian pilasters and entrance porticoes with corinthian columns and rooftop balustrades, and cornices with modillions at the eaves. The building is a contributing structure in the Midtown Neighborhood Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. The building served as the St. Charles County Courthouse until the St. Charles County Justice Center was completed in 1988, and the St. Charles County Administration Building until the present County Administration Building was constructed to the north in 1994. Today, the restored historic courthouse houses several county offices, as well as the St Charles County Executive Office.
