DescriptionSt. Patrick's Catholic Church (1873), Makara, Wellington, New Zealand, 7 September 2006.jpg |
Makara is part of the city of Wellington, but even today it is hard to get to - accessed by a winding road across steep hills. This church was built because the Catholic families could not get across the hills to mass in the city. Even so it proved difficult to get a priest to stay here, and very quickly it became a parish served every six weeks by Wellington priests. For its first 50 years this Catholic community was well known for its money raising for Irish independence. The modern stained glass in this building is superb, but rarely visited. |
