Summary[edit]

Description
English: The cruiser Aurora is famous for firing a blank shell that signalled the Bolsheviks to storm the Winter Palace in the October Revolution (November 1917 in the "new style" western calendar). Not a great photo, but the best I could do from a moving tour bus. The ship was laid down in 1897, launched in 1900, and commissioned in 1903. (Russia was not known for great efficiency.) She served in the Russo-Japanese War of 1905, and was interned in Manila. The Aurora is a museum, but still on the commissioned list of Russian navy ships. The example may have come from HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar in 1805, which is still commissioned in the Royal Navy.
