| Description |
English: The English Embankment, looking upstream (east) along the Neva River. The tour bus was crossing the Neva from Vasilyevsky Island, on Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge. The dome of St. Isaac Cathedral is barely visible at right center.
The bridge was the first permanent bridge over the Neva River and the longest bridge when it was opened in 1850. It was first named Blagoveshchensky (Annunciation) Bridge. Later it was called Nikolaevsky Bridge, after Tsar Nicholas (Nikolai) I. It was named Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge in 1918, after a a leader of an uprising in Sevastopol in 1905. (Actually, he was a lieutenant commander in the Russian navy.) The bridge was rebuilt in 2007, and the name was changed back to Blagoveshchensky Bridge. |
