Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt John-sub-Castro Church, Lewes (IoE Code 292973).jpg | St John-sub-Castro Church, Abinger Place, Lewes, District of Lewes, East Sussex, England. Built in 1839 to replace an ancient church on the same site. St John sub Castro Church replaced a much older church built on one of a series of 3 mounds in Lewes. (possibly of bronze age or earlier origin) Its link with the Lewes Castle (sub Castro = under the castle) may also be related to these mounds as the original Norman Castle in Lewes was built on the largest of these mounds, known as Brack Mount. The third mound was where the Lewes public house The Elephant and Castle know stands. Listed by English Heritage at Grade II (IoE Code 292973) |
