Description
Deutsch: Stab I./KG 53 (1. Reihe, 5 Personen v. rechts, sitzend). Juni 1940. Karl Mehnert, li. daneben Hptm. Friedrich Ziegler. I. d . Quelle: [1]
English: Staff I./KG 53 (1st row, 5 persons from the right, seated). The photo was taken in front of the commandant's office at Großostheim airfield near Aschaffenburg, between May 18 and June 21, 1940. The I./KG 53, equipped with Heinkel He 111 H, was previously based in Gelchsheim near Giebelstadt from May 10 to 18, 1940, with accommodation for staff personnel probably in the accommodation area of the nearby Giebelstadt airbase. In the center of the picture (with dog 'Strolch') the group commander of I./KG 53, Hptm. Karl Mehnert, to his left Hptm. Friedrich Ziegler. The other first lieutenants shown in the front row are (presumably) the squadron captains of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd squadrons of KG 53. The first lieutenant on the far left is wearing the anti-aircraft collar mirrors. The 6 officers shown in the 2nd row with black collars are not members of I./KG 53, but Luftwaffe personnel in the ranks Leutnant to Oberleutnant, who were responsible for operational and administrative tasks in the Grossostheim airstrip command. As a rule, these officers were civil servants and/or employees of the higher to higher (technical) administrative service of surrounding municipalities and state authorities in civilian life. The home base (peacetime location) of the staff and the I. group of KG 53 (Kampfgeschwader 53) was the Ansbach-Neukirchen airbase, today known as Ansbach-Katterbach, in Middle Franconia, Bavaria.
