Description Stamp of the United Arab Emirates - Emirate Ajman; 1970; commemorative block issue with with a single stamp showing as central motive an detail of the Painting “Liberty” (French original title: “La liberty guidant le people”) by Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863).; Depicted is the figure of the “Marianne” as Roman goddess of the Liberty (”Libertas”) with a so-called “bonnet rouge” (= “Phrygian cap”, German: “Jakobinermütze”), “The people” (guideless) is represent by the man with rifle in the clothings of the bourgeoisie with ”Castor-hat” (German: “Zylinder”) (left behind the Marianne) as allegory of the industrial revolution (= figure of the French writer Etienne Arago). The picture ininuates to the events of the French “July-Revolution” from from 27 July 1830 until 29 July 1830

and which, among others, resulted in the fall of the Bourbon-Monarchy (among others the French “Tricolore” which is pivoted by Marianne as call for the people to bring to fall the hated monarchy.; Although Delacroix was in Paris in these days, he had never participated on the events of the revolution.; The figure of the “Marianne” is a personificated allegory of the French nation and the (First) French Republic (existed until 1848) and goes back to a figure of the French poet Guillaume Lavabre which has toned the song “La garisou de Marianno” (French: “La guérison de Marianne”, German: “Mariannes Genesung”), which was sung in that time in the Provincial dialect of the French.; Until today was expressed the figure of the “Marianne” by eight, special beautiful French women (Brigitte Badot, Michéle Morgan, Mireille Mathieu, Catherine Deneuve, Inés de la Fressange, Laetitia Casta, Évelyn Thomas, Sophie Marceau).; They were always again sculpted (mostly as bust) and than exhibited in French townhalls.; Delacroix has created this artwork in 1830 in the style of the Romanticism with tendencies to the Historism and is contemporary located in the "Musée du Louvre" in Paris (France).; The emirate Ajman opened its post office on and issued its first set of stamps on .; The depicted stamp is one of the so-called “Dunes-issues”.; stamp postmarked
