[edit]DescriptionStatue Menhir (2978018305).jpg |
St Martin's, Isles of Scilly. STATUE MENHIR For whom do you stand waiting, ancient one, that lichens should have hoared your head and shoulders? I make out a nose and chin, worn by wind, an armpit, moistened by rain, but your seaward gaze misses the mainland, by a few degrees, as if you sought some sail, or awaited the coming of some great wave. Or perhaps you watch the gannet’s plunge, the fulmar’s glide, the dauntless, herculean straining of a dung beetle, wheeling his rabbit dropping across this sun-spumed tundra of granite and ling? Yes: That would be something worth the waiting. Source material: This poem was written whilst sitting beside the statue menhir on Chapel Down, St Martins, on August 25, 2004. The menhir, which resembles a human head and shoulders, has been dated to the fifteenth century B.C. Poem by Giles Watson, 2004. |
