Description

Cette statue du IIème siècle est conservée dans le musée d'Ostia Antica. Elle témoigne de l'importance du culte de Mithra qui disposait à Ostie de plusieurs sanctuaires. Il s'agit d'un culte d'origine orientale (Inde, Perse) qui était pratiqué à partir de la fin du Ier siècle à Rome et à Ostie, en particulier par les légionnaires.

Ces pratiques ont disparu au IVème siècle mais elles ont, durant plusieurs siècles, concurrencé le christianisme. Pendant le rite on partageait le pain et le vin et les adeptes étaient baptisés. De plus, Mithra était né un 25 décembre !
