Heriot, the son of a goldsmith, was born in 1563 and rose to become Dean of the Incorporation of Goldsmiths in 1598, one year after being appointed goldsmith to Queen Anne. Four years later he became goldsmith to James VI, following the Court to London at the Union of the Crowns in 1603. He died in 1624, having bequeathed his fortune for the foundation and endowment a hospital for the maintenance and education of the 'puir, faitherless bairns' of deceased Edinburgh burgesses. Work on the building began in 1628 on eight acres of land purchased by the trustees on the High Riggs between Greyfriars Kirk and the old town wall. Completion was delayed by the Cromwellian occupation when it was used for eight years to quarter the sick and wounded. It was finally opened to scholars in 1659.
