Description

The Staten Island Ferry, which takes 25 minutes one way to travel between Battery Park in Manhattan and St. George on Staten Island, is probably the greatest bargain in New York City, as it offers some of the best views of the harbor and the world-famous skyline, for free.

There are visitors on Liberty Island, but they are not allowed to enter the statue on this day; as the cranes on the island attest, the Statue of Liberty is under renovation and security upgrades, and therefore has been closed since October 2011, and scheduled to remain closed through summer 2012. Which is a bit of a bummer, because the top of the pedestal is among the best places to get views of New York City.

In the foreground there is a crane boat, and in the distance, a United Airlines Boeing 777 makes its final approach to Newark Airport.
