Summary[edit]

Description
English: Statue of Senusret III as a sphynx. Gneiss, L. 73 × W. 29.5 × H. 42.5 cm, 114.3 kg. Reign of Senusret III, ca. 1878–1840 B.C.E., Twelfth Dynasty, Middle Kingdom. From Egypt; Possibly from Upper Egypt, Thebes, Karnak. Metropolitan Museum of Art. Accesion Number 17.9.2. «Sphinxes are composite creatures that combine the head of a king or a queen with the body of a lion, representing human intellect joinded with feline power. The most famous sphinx is the colossal statue erected by the Fourth Dynasty pharaoh Khafre at Giza., adjacent to the Great Pyramids. The lean flanks and taut muscles of the sphinx seen here convey a particular sense of tension and watchfulness, appropriate to the creature’s role as a guardian.»
Français : Statue de Sésostris III en sphynx. Gneiss, L. 73 × L. 29,5 × H. 42,5 cm, 114,3 kg. Règne de Sésostris III, v. 1878-1840 AEC., douzième dynastie, Moyen Empire. Peut-être de Haute-Égypte, Thèbes, Karnak. Metropolitan Museum of Art. Accesion Number 17.9.2.
