Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Stern of the U.S. Navy attack transport USS Carlisle (APA-69) at Bikini Atoll, in 1989, showing the smashed aft deckhouse and bitts. By accident, the Crossroads Able bomb detonated circa 400 metres off Carlisle with her port side facing the blast. The blast displaced Carlisle approximately 50 metres, toppled the stacks and mainmast, displaced the superstructure to starboard, and damaged the foremast. The ship was first seen in photographs less than three minutes after the burst, smoking heavily amidships. The ship sank unobserved approximately one-half hour after the detonation.
