Notes In letter 569, on January 7, van Gogh announced to start painting again the very next day, after his disease, and that he would do two still lifes. One of them is this painting. In letter W11 he describes to his sister a remedy against suicide which was given by Charles Dickens: "A daily glass of wine, a piece of bread and cheese, and a pipe with tobacco." The book, Manuel annuaire de la santé ... [Annual manual of health ...] refers to same theme, and the letter and sealing wax are an allusion to his frequent contact with Theo - in other words, that he wanted to lead his usual life again. This painting is, to some extent, a self-portrait.
