English: Stockdale was Administrative Assistant for newly elected Congressman George Smathers from Florida. Their office was two doors down from that of John F. Kennedy, also newly elected. All three had served in the Pacific during WWII, Stockdale and Smathers as US Marines, Kennedy as Navy Commander of PT Boat. Stockdale and Kennedy became close, lifelong friends. |
