Summary

[edit]
Description
Arms of Strangways: Sable, two lions passant paly of six argent and gules
Arms of Strangways (depicted slightly inaccurately, should be Sable, two lions passant paly of six argent and gules, whilst depicted here is Sable, two lions passant argent overall three pallets gules). With a crescent or for difference/cadency, for a second son or junior branch. Stained glass roundel, c.1540, Mapperton Church, Dorset. Contemporary with other similar heraldic roundels in the same church relating to prominent Tudor courtiers with Dorset origins and Knights of the Garter, together with one of John Morgan (d.1535), father of Robert Morgan, builder of Mapperton House. Probably the arms of Sir Giles Strangways (1486-1546), of Melbury House, Melbury Sampford, and of Abbotsbury, both in Dorset, a courtier of King Henry VIII who served as Sheriff of Somerset and Sheriff of Dorset for 1512–13, 1517–18, 1524–25, 1533–34 and 1541–42 and a Member of Parliament for Dorset in 1529 and 1539. His arms (with his first name Latinised as Egidius) also appear similarly in Wolveton House, Dorset, the seat of the Trenchard family, as reported by John Hutchins in his History of Dorset, 1774[1]
Date C. 1540
