| Description |
English: Strasburg Rail Road locomotive 89 with an excursion train at Groff's Grove, a picnic stop on the line between Strasburg and Paradise, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1910, and served the Grand Trunk Railway and Canadian National Railway. It has a 2-6-0 (1 C) wheel arrangement.
The Strasburg Rail Road was chartered in 1832, and probably first operated with horse-drawn cars. Steam train operation may have begun in 1851. Loss of traffic and natural disasters forced it out of business in 1957. A group of railroad enthusiasts turned it into a preservation line with steam locomotives and railroad museum. The line from Strasburg to Paradise is 4.5 miles (7 km) long. It has a connection with the Pennsylvania Railroad at Paradise, and occasionally carries real freight. |
