A estrelicia ou ave do paraíso, de nome científico (Strelitzia reginae), é uma planta herbácea, perene rizomatosa originária da África do Sul, com aproximadamente 1,20 m de altura, de folhas duras, grandes e ovoladas com pecíolos bastante compridos. É cultivada em jardins de regiões tropicais e sub-tropicais e bastante apreciada pela beleza das suas flores, que com aproximadamente 15 cm são de cor laranja e azul e assemelham-se à cabeça de uma ave do paraíso.

O termo científico desta planta "reginae" do Latim = reina, foi dedicado a rainha Carlota de Mecklemburgo-Strelitz, esposa do rei Jorge III de Inglaterra, morta em 1818.

The estrelicia or bird of the paradise, of scientific name (Strelitzia reginae), is a herbaceous plant, everlasting rizomatosa originating from the South Africa, with approximately 1,20 m of height, of hard, big leaves and ovoladas with quite long petioles. It is cultivated in gardens of tropical and subtropical regions and appreciated enough by the beauty of his flowers, which with approximately 15 cm are of orange and blue color and which liken to the head of a bird of the paradise.

The scientific term of this plant 'reginae' of the Latin = reigns, there was dedicated to queen Carlota de Mecklemburgo-Strelitz, wife of the king Jorge III of England, dead woman in 1818.
