Strelitzia reginae or crane flower or bird of paradise FLOWER PHOTO TAKEN at Tagore park of Mahe district, Puducherry UT , INDIA

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sir Joseph Banks described the species in 1788. Strelitzia reginae, commonly known as the crane flower or bird of paradise, is a species of flowering plant indigenous to South Africa. An evergreen perennial, it is widely cultivated for its dramatic flowers. In temperate areas it is a popular houseplant. They are pollinated by sunbirds, which use the spathe as a perch when visiting the flowers. The weight of the bird when standing on the spathe opens it to release the pollen onto the bird's feet, which is then deposited on the next flower it visits.
