Summary[edit]

Description
English: Built in 1975-1979, this Brutalist building was designed by Marcel Breuer to serve as a United States Courthouse and Federal office building for the city of Columbia, South Carolina. The building served as a federal courthouse until 2003, when the federal courts moved to the newer Matthew J Perry Federal Courthouse nearby. The building is clad in concrete panels, with a gray granite panel cladding at the base, a sixteen-story tower section featuring geometric concrete fins and sun shades at the windows, known as Brise Soleils, creating a regular rhythm across the facade, tapered corners at one end of each facade of the tower, a decorative butterfly roof at the service podium on the Laurel Street facade, a lower two-story courthouse podium along Richland Street, which extends to Assembly Street, which features similar Brise Soleils at the windows on the north and west facades, and a courtyard to the south of the podium, which features a decorative aluminum sculpture known as Right Turn on White by artist Barbara Neijna, cylindrical planters, and concrete pavers. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, and today, houses various federal offices.
