Notes | Although previously identified as a portrait of a Polish prince, the portrait most probably depicts a son of Archduchess Maria Maddalena of Austria, Grand Duchess of Tuscany. After released from French imprisonment in 1640, Prince John Casimir Vasa was accompanied for some time in his journey by Anthony van Dyck, who applied for obtaining the commission for the decoration of the Grand Gallery of the Louvre. Identification as portrait of John Casimir Vasa should be rejected due to lack of resemblance to his preserved effigies. It is also possible that the portrait depicts the Polish Prince, Alexander Charles Vasa (1614-1634). Painted in style of Justus Sustermans. Identification and attribution by Marcin Latka (Artinpl). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
