Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In 1809, after the Russian conquest of Finland, a massive offensive against Swedish-held Åland was launched. The Swedes on Åland were forced to retreat, during a blizzard, while Russian cavalry attacked their rear, which is what the painting portrays. The painting was first published in: Nordensvan, Carl Otto: Finska kriget 1808-1809. Stockholm: Albert Bonniers Förlag (1898).
